The process of learning involves multiple ways of interacting with information and data. It depends on the medium of the data as well as the technique of learning. One such technique is learning by solving open ended problems, this requires a certain amount of creativity and divergent thinking. In the context of K-12 education, it could lead to applying concepts learned in class to real life scenarios. Working together in a collaborative environment, students can share experiences, enhance knowledge, and converge towards a collaborative potential far greater than an individual. It also sets the path for being able to effectively work in a group which is important for all aspects of life. Augmented Reality (AR) provides a unique affordance - that of being able to partake in experiences that would otherwise not be realistically possible. This research project brings together all these elements and studies how augmented reality can be used in a classroom environment towards collaboratively solving open ended problems. In terms of AR, it creates experiences beyond the screen and brings interactions in the real world through tangible artifacts. My role in this project was the conceptualization of using augmented reality with open ended problem solving for collaborative classroom education, design of the study protocol and creation of AR apps that were used in user testing.

This research is currently In Press and due to be presented at the 27th International Conference on Computers in Education in Taiwan, an updated version will be put up shortly after it is published.
